Real Estate Career Opportunities
How To Get Into Real Estate
If you are wondering how to get into real estate and what real estate career opportunities might be the best fit for you, you need to first define what you want to accomplish with your real estate license, and how much effort you are willing to put into it achieving your goals. There are many different opportunities and paths to take in a real estate career, so make sure the real estate career path you take matches the goals that you have set for your future real estate career.
Here are a couple of questions that you should ask yourself to help determine what real estate career opportunity is the best way for you to get into real estate:
- Do you want a salaried real estate job or do you want to be a independent contractor and 100% commission real estate agent? If you are presently at a point in your life where you can not afford to jump into a commission only real estate career with both feet, you might want to consider pursuing a support position with a busy real estate agent or real estate team. These real estate career opportunities can range from an unlicensed administrative assistant, unlicensed transaction coordinator, licensed buyer’s agent to a licensed referral only agent. Though your risk is lower on the front end on how to get into real estate, you need to remember that you are not learning how to build your own real estate business, but rather, you are supporting and helping that real estate agent or real estate team build their real estate business. For those people that are willing to enter real estate as a full-time real estate agent, and commit to becoming the local real estate expert, the sky is the limit on the type of quality of life you can build with a real estate career.
- Are you going to start you real estate career part-time or full-time? The reality is, that 20% of the real estate agents in your real estate market make 80% of the commissions earned. These real estate agents are full-time, so that they can be available to their clients during the day as well as be able to participate in all of the real estate training and education that their real estate company provides. One of the big myths about a career in real estate, is that you should not expect to make any money for your first 6 months. This is absolutely false, but for the people that choose to believe this is true, it is reality. The great thing about a career in real estate, is that you are the X factor, and what you are willing to put into it, is what you are going to get out of it. If you have to maintain a full-time day job while you ‘transition’ into real estate, how are you going to be able to break through and be competitive, if you can’t participate in the training and education and your competition is more committed than you?
- If you are going to be a full-time real estate agent, where do you envision the majority of your real estate leads coming from? The answer to this question will ultimately determine whether or not you have decided to take a real estate job or to start your own real estate business. Many people start a real estate career because they want to finally take control of their future success and not have dictated by an outside source. If you are not willing to take ownership of your own real estate lead generation, you will never truly build a successful real estate business. At Keller Williams Realty, we treat our real estate agent like business owners. It is their responsibility to generate their own real estate leads, and it is our responsibility to train and support them, so they can generate more real estate business, and create the leverage they need to build the type of quality of life they wanted to achieve with a real estate career.
There are no right or wrong answers to the above questions, but hopefully asking yourself those questions helped you better understand the real estate career opportunities that might be the best fit for you at this time. Just because you have a full-time day job, or just want to start your real estate career part time, does not mean that someday you can’t transition into be a full time real estate agent.
