Like so many other Los Angeles studio musicians, a number of years back guitarist and composer Larry Carlton was faced with a choice: whether to go solo and develop a name for himself under his own name or to continue the less risky, more lucrative existence as a session guitarist for prominent musicians. Fortunately for fans of this eclectic guitarist, he chose the former, and has recorded under his own name for Warner Bros., MCA Records and GRP Records since 1978.
Carlton’s studio credits from the 1970s and early ’80s include musicians and groups like Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell, Michael Jackson, Sammy Davis Jr., Herb Alpert, Quincy Jones, Bobby Bland, Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and literally dozens of others. Among his more notable projects as a session guitarist were Joni Mitchell’s critically acclaimed Court and Spark album and Donald Fagen’s Nightfly album. Over his career Carlton has won three Grammys for his performances and compositions, including the theme music for the hit television series, Hill Street Blues. Mark Zupan’s Lessons in Life
Mega Camp is an incredible opportunity to learn life lessons from those who have persevered. Mark Zupan is what he is: a world class athlete with a rock star personality. What sets Zupan apart is the wheelchair, his most reliable source of mobility since a spinal cord injury paralyzed him nearly 12 years ago. The chair is also the primary tool he uses playing wheelchair rugby to show the world who he is and, by example, who we all can be.
Zupan’s competitiveness at quadriplegic rugby brought him national attention as one of the stars of the Oscar-nominated documentary Murderball, the story of his team’s performance in the 2002 Paralympics
Gilbert Teaches How to Run to the Future
Gilbert Tuhabonye was born in the southern county of Songa in Burundi. Gilbert forged a love of running early in life. While in school, Gilbert began running competitively and became national champion in the 400 and 800 meters as an 11th grader. As a senior, Gilbert was already an extraordinary runner whose goal was to get a scholarship to an American school, get an education and return home to Burundi.
Fate had another plan for Gilbert.
